Waxman, Dingell Head Into Back Room Battle
Scenes from ringside in the best fight in Congress right now:
Henry Waxman has just arrived at a Democratic caucus meeting and said he'll make a presentation arguing for his candidacy as chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, but wouldn't say what that argument would be.
He then came out again and went into a side room, saying: "This is my holding pen."
Reigning Chairman John Dingell was next, and wheeled into the meeting to make his case for keeping the gavel.
"No comment right now, young lady," he said to a reporter as he rolled into the meeting.
The final decision may not come until tomorrow, but the sparring will be most intense today as the caucus debates the chairmanship of one of the most powerful committees in the House.
