(CBS) WILLISTON PARK, N.Y. - What started as a text message fight over the TV show "The Walking Dead" ended with a Long Island woman in the hospital and her boyfriend charged with attempted murder, police say.

Monday at around 2:30 a.m., Jared Gurman, 26, was engaging in an ongoing debate with his long-time girlfriend, Jessica Gelderman, through text messages over whether or not a zombie apolcalypse-type scenario as depicted in the popular AMC show could ever happen in real life, CBS New York reports.

"He feels strongly about the possibility that some military mishap could occur. She thinks it's ridiculous," Nassau County Detective Lt. Raymond Cote said. "She was not taking him seriously or taking the show as seriously as he does."

Police said Gelderman went to Gurman's apartment to talk to him because "the tone of the text dialogue got to the point where she felt uncomfortable leaving him along for the night," Cote said.

When Gelderman arrived, Gurman was standing outside with a semi-automatic rifle, police said.

As she tried to calm him down and walk inside, police said Gurman shot her once in the back.

Police said Gurman then drove her to the hospital.

According to Cote, Gelderman suffered a shattered rib, a pierced lung, and a pierced diaphragm and is in serious, but stable condition.

Gurman was arrested at the hospital and is charged with attempted murder.
