Turn Down The Music

Are you or your kids addicted to loud music? It sounds strange, but researchers at Northeastern University studied 90 people who prefer music played very loud, reports CBS News Health and Medical Contributor Dr. Emily Senay.

In the current issue of the journal Ear and Hearing, they report that some couldn't bring themselves to turn down the volume even when they knew it could permanently harm their hearing. That kind of resistance to change is a classic symptom of addiction.

Interestingly, the study did not confirm the common stereotype that most people who like loud music are rock 'n' roll fans. They can be opera buffs, or classical fans, too.

In any case, the lesson here is that when you warn your kids about hearing loss from that blasting music, don't be surprised if it goes in one ear and out the other.
