The Goofy Presidential Campaign

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

Love this summer vacation thing. Didn't do much special. It was just great being off for a week. And when you are out of the newsroom for awhile, you see the world with a renewed sense of wonder. I'm not talking about sunsets and whales. I'm talking more about how goofy the presidential campaign is.

For instance, is Barack Obama playing the race card? If you are a person of color, and you know that being a person of color probably is not going to be to your advantage in a presidential election ... how then exactly does calling attention to your race help you? If your opponent says it's true, does it make it so? And maybe, just maybe, by saying your opponent is playing the race card aren't you the one who is doing the very thing you accuse your opponent of doing?

It's tricky. And absurd. And a little sad. I thought this election was going to be about more. Maybe that will happen come September when vacation is over.
