Teardrop Tour For Cystic Fibrosis
A rather unusual traveler is dropping by The Saturday Early Show.
Tired of her career as an interior designer in San Francisco, Kelly Schumacher decided to take a sabbatical.
She sold everything and moved in with her parents in Montana.
Searching for an adventure, Kelly collaborated with Ron Starheim in Seattle on a fund raiser for cystic fibrosis.
By hand, Ron builds teardrop trailers, modeled after a 1939 trailer Ron bought from a farmer. Kelly saw one of Ron's trailers on display at a sporting good store in Seattle and asked him about buying one for a cross-country adventure.
Instead, Ron offered to donate a trailer (including canoe and bicycle) to Kelly if she would use the trip to raise money for cystic fibrosis. By the end of the 12-week trip, Kelly and Ron hope to raise $60,000. The trip is being sponsored by several corporations, including Home Depot.
Kelly travels with her dog and, during their stops, she sells raffle tickets for $10 each. At the end of the trip, the winner will get to keep Kelly's trailer (including canoe and bike).
She is at the halfway mark of her trip (six weeks) and, after her stop in the Big Apple, she will turn around drive back to the West coast. On her trip from West to East, Kelly drove through the northern states. On her way back, she'll take a southern route.
While Kelly often camps in her trailer she does occasionally sleep in a hotel or with a host.
About that trailer: It is a replica of the original Teardrop, circa 1930s to early 1950s. The trailer weighs 689 pounds when it is empty. There are two doors and, inside, there is a bed and, under that, there are two full storage areas. The trailer also has a galley area in the back, with the option of a 12-volt cooler, a two-burner stove, and plenty of cupboard space. The trailer is valued at about $5,900.
