Washington, D.C., and 37 of the 50 states run lotteries. Adults buy lottery tickets, usually for a dollar each. If they pick the right combination of numbers, they win. Many lottery players dream of big prizes.

"I would take my girlfriend to the Bahamas, and I would buy her and her parents a new car," says one ticket buyer.

A couple in Illinois just won $104 million.

Lottery players have one important thing in common. Almost all of them will lose. To pay for that $104 million winning ticket, people have to buy more than 200 million tickets that don't win. That is a lot of losers.
