Sleek New Profile From Gateway

Apple's iMac has won a lot of fans with its futuristic, colorful design. On the PC side, Gateway is getting a lot of wows for a new model called the Profile. Gateway's David Pendery...

"The form factor is the same, it looks like you just have an LCD panel sitting on your desk." But it's a whole PC, the speakers are built into the base... "Yup. The speakers are built into the base, you plug in your mouse and your keyboard and your phone cord for the Internet and you can be up and online in five minutes."

If you're short on space it's hard to beat. But despite the size, there's plenty of power built in...

"Standard configuration is a 15 inch LCD display, which is the viewable area of a 17 inch monitor, it's got 64 megs of RAM, a 4.3 gig hard drive, DVD ROM, floppy drive, digital audio integrated onto the motherboard, an AMD K6-2 400Mhz processor and it's all built into the one unit.

There are USB and network ports and two PCMCIA slots as well for expansion. The price... about 22 hundred dollars. Not cheap by today's standards. The Profile was launched by Gateway first in Japan, where it promptly took over the number two spot in the market. You can take a look for yourself at gateway.com.
