Simmons Gets Kidney Donated By Wife

Oklahoma State football coach Bob Simmons has undergone a kidney transplant with his wife donating the kidney.

"The surgery went very smoothly and there have been no complications," Simmons said in a statement released through the school.

Simmons, 49, and his wife, Linda, were released from University Hospital on Saturday.

Simmons did not discuss his medical history and the reasons for the transplant.

Simmons had not publicly commented on the surgery until Monday.

University Hospital acknowledged Thursday that Simmons was in the hospital for undisclosed surgery and said it would make a statement upon his release. Oklahoma State officials were not aware of the surgery until then.

"Last week, I was given a kidney, by my wife Linda, to restore my health," Simmons said. "We went into a lot of prayer before this decision was made. The transplant was done on Tuesday and we were released from the hospital on Saturday."

Simmons said the surgery went well and there have been no complications.

"We are both doing fine and look forward to the future," he said.

Simmons, who is in his fourth year at Oklahoma State, said he was experiencing only minor discomfort and would be on the field for the start of Oklahoma State's spring drills on Saturday.

"The doctors said I could do almost anything I wanted but I can't run sprints and I can't hit," he said.

Simmons said he wanted everyone to know "this is not just about Bob Simmmons."

"This is about a loving gift from my wife and the glory goes to God," he said. "Now, more than ever, I am remind of Luke Chapter one, verse 37 that says 'For nothing is impossible with God.' "
