Senators Send Neckar To Rangers

Ottawa Senators rookie general manager Rick Dudley made his first trade Friday, sending defenseman Stan Neckar to the New York Rangers for forward Bill Berg and a 1999 second-round draft pick.

Neckar had played in only three games for Ottawa this season after breaking his right foot during an Oct. 22 game. Neckar had held out all of the preseason for a new contract, finally signing for $750,000.

Berg had spent all of this season with Hartford of the AHL, collecting 10 points in 15 games.

"Bill Berg is the type of guy we need," Dudley said. "He's a high character, low-maintenance type player. He's a gritty player who can provide depth at a position where we need it."

Neckar, Ottawa's second pick in the 1994 entry draft, has played 195 games with Ottawa, with six goals and 20 points.

Berg has played in 502 games with three NHL teams and scored 53 goals.
