Same Tough Questions For Obama

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

During ABC's debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama Wednesday night, a considerable amount of time was taken up by issues which were potentially difficult for Senator Obama.

His statement about rural voters; his relationship with his old pastor; whether or not he wears an American flag pin. All of these issues have been pretty much chewed to the bone in the blogosphere and on the cables; and because they have received so much attention, wouldn't it make sense to lead with them in a debate?

So ABC thought. An interesting thing is happening this election cycle. People are paying attention.

The questions weren't so much out of bounds as they were out of order. There are wars and economic crisis to contend with; perhaps a tad more important. One of these days we in the media will catch up. I promise.

Harry's daily commentary can be heard on many CBS Radio News affiliates across the country.
