Red Hot Duo: Shakira And Wyclef
When Shakira says "Hips Don't Lie," she's talking about quality control. "When a song is not ready, my hips don't shake and don't move," she told co-anchor Julie Chen on a visit to The Early Show.
The world's biggest Latin female crossover artist was explaining the title of her smash hit single, "Hips Don't Lie," from her latest CD, "Oral Fixation Vol. 2." For the single, she teamed up with Wyclef Jean, formerly of the Fugees. The two of them sat down with Chen to talk about the experience of their collaboration and about Shakira's judgmental hips.
"Being in the studio with Shakira, this is the first woman that actually said, until her hips move, this song is not a hit. So her hips started moving and — bang — there you have it," said Wyclef, who added that the two of them were a great team. "It is like natural for me because it's like the Caribbean soul."
And the feeling was mutual. "He is a creative genius," Shakira said. "I enjoyed so much working with this man and seeing him improvise."
Shakira wrote her first song when she was 8 years old, had a recording contract with Sony by the time she was 13, and has sold over 30 million records during the past decade. She's embarking on a world tour this summer, after which she is planning some time off to concentrate on a few of her newer interests.
"I'd like to learn a little bit more about gardening, which is my new exotic pleasure," she told Chen. "As you approach your 30s, you start finding strange things amusing, like gardening, for example."
