(CBS) LAKELAND, Fla. - Authorities in Polk County are investigating the death of a 12-year-old girl who was found dead Tuesday, according to CBS affiliate WTSP.

Police reportedly said Rebecca Ann Sedwick was last seen on Monday morning when she left her home to get on a bus to school. Police said she never got on the bus and it was later discovered she did not take her books with that morning.

According to the station, the teen's mother reported the girl missing when she didn't return home from school.

Rebecca's body was reportedly found Tuesday afternoon on the grounds of a former cement company in Lakeland.

The girl's mother told WTSP that Rebecca was bullied in the past through social media and was home schooled from February until the end of the last school year. She had recently started to attend Lawton Chiles Middle Academy.

School officials told the station they never had any complaints about Rebecca being bullied or having trouble at school.
