Obama Seeks Meaningful Transition In Egypt

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says he's spoken with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and "he recognizes that the status quo is not sustainable and a change must take place."

Obama said he told Mubarak that an orderly transition must be meaningful and peaceful, must begin now and must include opposition parties.

Obama spoke at the White House on Tuesday evening not long after Mubarak announced he would not seek re-election in September, ending his 30-year reign. American officials say an envoy Obama dispatched to Egypt had urged Mubarak not to seek another term.

But Mubarak's announcement wasn't enough to satisfy Egyptian protesters, who want him out immediately.
