N.Y. Mayor Wants Tax On Plastic Bags
Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to charge Big Apple shoppers five cents for each plastic bag they tote from a store.
The nickel tax would be charged to customers at the register as a way to raise money and reduce the use of the environmentally unfriendly bags. The proposal is projected to raise $16 million per year.
"It may work at the bigger stores, but it won't work for bodegas," Joe Alhalmi, a Harlem bodega owner, told the New York Post. "People want free bags all the time."
