The AccuWeather pollen forecast levels align with pollen levels that most local allergists report: low, moderate, high, and very high.

Since different pollens prompt different degrees of allergic reactions, AccuWeather cautions, it's difficult to quantify how much the typical allergy sufferer might be affected by particular pollen levels. For example, the level of pine pollen in the air might be "very high," but pine pollen isn't one of the most allergenic pollens, and so it probably wouldn't cause symptoms as severe as the same levels of a more allergenic pollen would.

In general terms, a pollen forecast of "high" or "very high" pollen levels indicates AccuWeather would expect that most seasonal allergy sufferers will experience symptoms. How severe those symptoms are depends both on the individual and the specific pollen. Low and moderate pollen levels generally signify that those individuals who are most sensitive to pollens may experience some allergic response.

Tree pollens are most prominent in early spring (March/April.) Grass pollens typically are problematic from late spring through summer (May through July), and weed pollens are typically a late summer concern (August/September).

The pollen forecast map provided to The Early Show represents a combination of tree, grass and weed pollens. The map highlights the highest level AccuWeather is expecting of those three pollen types. For example, the graphic may indicate that both Chicago and Miami should expect high pollen levels, but Chicago may be from tree pollen and Miami from grass.

Areas of the map that are blue are ones where significant pollen levels aren't anticipated.
