Natalie Imbruglia: International Hit

Natalie Imbruglia is one of the most talked-about pop singers in a long time.

The 23-year-old ex-soap opera actress' debut album, Left of the Middle, has already gone platinum.

Imbruglia appeared on CBS 'This Morning' to perform her hit song Torn, that topped the British charts for 12 weeks and helped her album debut at No. 10 in the United States.

The Australian-born Imbruglia appeared on the soap opera Neighbors for two years before taking herself to London in 1996 to record Left of the Middle.

Her breakthrough song, Torn was originally released by a band named Ednaswap. Yet, it was not until Imbruglia had the song tailored to her that it became a mainstream hit.

"Hit is a funny word for me," Imbruglia says of the success of Torn. "More than it becoming a hit, this was the song that I wanted to introduce myself with. I felt that it set up the rest of the album because of its diversity."

Imbruglia cautiously reflects on how her music has taken on a life of its own. "I would like it to slow down, because it's such a new thing to me. I feel I have got to earn whatever recognition I achieved and that I am worthy of it because of the music."

There is word of a possible fall tour, but no dates have been set.
