Mich.'s Stabenow Targets Senate
Rep. Debbie Stabenow plans to seek the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat of Republican Spencer Abraham.
Democrats regard Abraham, a first-term senator, as vulnerable and have made him a national target in next year's election. Stabenow is in her second term in the House.
Still unknown is whether Jack Kevorkian's former lawyer, Geoffrey Fieger, will run, and if so, whether he'll do it as an independent or in the Democratic primary.
Stabenow said Monday that she had asked Fieger for his support. "Geoff's got to make up his mind on what he wants to do," she said.
Stabenow, 48, is known for her outgoing personality and energetic campaign style.
"This (campaign) will be about the issues that matter most," she said. She listed Social Security, Medicare, medical patients' rights and education as top concerns.
Fieger, a Democrat who lost a bid for governor last year, said he is considering the Senate race.
