Men Are Definitely From Mars

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. After years of trying to convince ourselves of our similarities, research and common sense tell us that men and women are radically different creatures.

To that end, two British authors have written a how-to-manual for young men titled, "The Dangerous Book For Boys." Its first page includes a list of essentials: Swiss army knife, compass, box of matches. It's enough to make many a modern mom scream in protest about the danger. And therein lies the secret: men — boys — love this stuff.

To deny what seems to be such an intrinsic part of who we are is futile. We can be trained to be generous, kind and respectful. But mostly we'd like to get dirty and go on an adventure.

The book has sections on war-fare, bugs, cards and pirates: how to build a tree house and the Ten Commandments. To be truthful, I know plenty of girls and women who would love this but, really, it's mostly for boys. Sorry.
