McCain Receives Texas Mega-Church Pastor's Endorsement

(CBS)
From CBS News' Dante Higgins:

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS -- John McCain received the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee citing McCain's pledge to defend Israel and his anti-abortion rights record as the main reasons for his support.

"He will be a strong courageous leader from the first day he steps in office," the evangelical leader said. "What Senator McCain, I feel, needs to do to bring evangelicals into his camp is to make it very clear that he is a strong defender of Israel and that he has a strong 24 year of being pro-life. And I think on those two issues they will get on common ground and have a common understanding," added Hagee, the pastor of Dallas' Cornerstone mega-church.

While Hagee is a much-needed conservative supporter he is known for his controversial writings about Armageddon and about Israel.

"Our support of Israel has nothing to do with an end of times scenario. Our support of Israel is because we feel their cause is just," Hagee said.

"All I can tell you is that I am happy to have Pastor Hagee's support," McCain said.

This isn't the first time Hagee has campaigned with McCain. He gave a soul-stirring speech at the Citadel back in September and he also introduced McCain at the "Christians United for Israel" conference in Washington D.C. last July.
