McCain Praises Palin, Knocks Ifill

(CBS)
From CBS News' John Bentley:

(WASHINGTON) – After returning here yesterday afternoon to vote "yes" on the Senate bailout plan, John McCain will travel to Colorado today for a town hall in Denver this afternoon. His rival Barack Obama has a slight lead in the polling there, a state that President Bush won by five points four years ago.

Tonight, however, McCain will be glued to his television watching the only vice presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. McCain spent his morning talking to the cable morning shows about his running mate.

"She's smart, she's tough, she's been in debates before," McCain said on "Fox & Friends," adding that exposing her to the country can only be beneficial.

"The more they see of her, the more they love her, and I'm confident of that at the end."

The McCain campaign has also been critical of debate moderator Gwen Ifill, who is writing a book about black leaders that contains a chapter about Obama.

"Frankly, I wish they had picked a moderator that isn't writing a book favorable to Barack Obama, let's face it. But I have to have confidence that Gwen Ifill will handle this as the professional journalist that she is," McCain said.
