Mahoney Says Allegations 'false'

Embattled Rep. Tim Mahoney defended himself Tuesday from allegations that he paid off a former mistress, calling the charges against him “false.”

Mahoney made a brief appearance in his district with his wife Terry and did not take any questions from reporters.

The Florida Democrat said he takes "full responsibility" for his actions and the pain he caused his family, but he did not directly admit to any wrongdoing.

On Monday, reports emerged that Mahoney made a $121,000 payment to a former staffer with whom he reportedly had an affair.

“I would have come forward earlier but making sure my family is ok is far more important than any political career," Mahoney said. "I have not violated my oath of office, nor have I violated any laws, and I consider this to be a private matter.”
