Assess your financial situation. Calculate how long you can be in search mode.
Get organized. Prepare a space with computer, phone, pens, highlighters, folders, etc.
Schedule a calendar. Break out specific times for job search tasks (research, phone calls, etc.).
Identify what you offer. Develop a written list of skills, industry exposure, experience, etc.
Seek out positions and companies that fit YOU. Don't apply to just "any" job.
Think outside the box. Consider new industries, related positions, relocation and taking a course to update skills.
Ready your resume. Replace objective with strong positioning statement and customize with keywords.
Prepare a portfolio, visual proof of your skills, experience, and accomplishments. It's an amazing talking tool!
Search all channels available: Internet, recruiters, college placement offices, job fairs, etc.
Network. Get out of the house and chat up your knowledge and ideas with industry professionals.
Keep track of all your research. Impress your market during networking meetings and interviews.
Follow up with phone calls, e-mails and letters. Don't wait for the call. Be respectful, but persistent.
Maintain your personal commitments. Work out, spend time with family, and so on.
Seek help. Career coaches and professional writers have the expertise to reduce time to employment.
Develop a sense of humor. A smile goes a long way to reduce tension and frustration.
