Lisa Panarello, founder and chief operating officer of Careers Advance, has offered us this check list for job seekers:
- Assess your financial situation. Calculate how long you can be in search mode.
- Get organized. Prepare a space with computer, phone, pens, highlighters, folders, etc.
- Schedule a calendar. Break out specific times for job search tasks (research, phone calls, etc.).
- Identify what you offer. Develop a written list of skills, industry exposure, experience, etc.
- Seek out positions and companies that fit YOU. Don't apply to just "any" job.
- Think outside the box. Consider new industries, related positions, relocation and taking a course to update skills.
- Ready your resume. Replace objective with strong positioning statement and customize with keywords.
- Prepare a portfolio, visual proof of your skills, experience, and accomplishments. It's an amazing talking tool!
- Search all channels available: Internet, recruiters, college placement offices, job fairs, etc.
- Network. Get out of the house and chat up your knowledge and ideas with industry professionals.
- Keep track of all your research. Impress your market during networking meetings and interviews.
- Follow up with phone calls, e-mails and letters. Don't wait for the call. Be respectful, but persistent.
- Maintain your personal commitments. Work out, spend time with family, and so on.
- Seek help. Career coaches and professional writers have the expertise to reduce time to employment.
- Develop a sense of humor. A smile goes a long way to reduce tension and frustration.
