'Jane Doe No. 5' Comes Forward

For more than a year, she has been known as "Jane Doe No. 5," a woman who Paula Jones' lawyers believed had suffered a sexual assault at the hands of President Clinton.

Now, despite sworn testimony to the contrary, "Jane Doe No. 5" has come forward to tell her story, reports CBS News Correspondent John Roberts.

It began with a campaign stop at a nursing home in Van Buren, Ark., some 20 years ago. Bill Clinton, who was then the state attorney-general making his first run for governor, met with residents and the owner of the nursing home, Juanita Broaddrick.

In an interview in Saturday's Washington Post and later in a conversation with CBS News, Broaddrick says that she was sexually assaulted by Mr. Clinton in a hotel room just a week after that visit. She claims her lip was nearly bitten through in the incident, but her story has not remained consistent.

In an affidavit sworn out as "Jane Doe No. 5" for the Paula Jones case, Broaddrick denied the assault took place. Now she says that statement was false.

Broaddrick was questioned about the incident by Kenneth Starr's legal team and House impeachment managers. But the investigation was dropped after it was determined that the Clinton side did not influence what she said in the affidavit.

Kevin Hickey, Broaddrick's son, says the memory is still painful to his mother.

"She fully understands that this was 20 years ago, and would just as soon leave it there," he says. "But I think there comes a point where you have to decide, 'Well, I want my side of it told, and if it's going to be out there, it's going to be accurate'."

The Washington Post spoke with a witness who confirmed Broaddrick's injuries after the incident. As for the alleged attack itself, there is only Broaddrick's word.

Friday, President Clinton's attorney, David Kendall, released a statement, saying: "Any allegation that the president assaulted Mrs. Broaddrick more than 20 years ago is absolutely false."
