Wisconsin high school prom gunman was bullied, students say
Students who knew the 18-year-old gunman at a Wisconsin High School prom described him as introverted, aloof and a victim of bullying, reports CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan.
Jakob Wagner was shot and killed outside Antigo High School after he wounded two students leaving prom.
"We did kind of bond because we were bullied by a lot of the same people and kind of in the same ways," said student Katie Arrowood. "I think we all knew he was bullied."
Wagner was a senior at the high school last year. He reportedly had been dating a current student at the school who broke up with him last month. He also had an interest in guns.
Schools officials said Wagner had a high-powered rifle and a large clip of ammunition. Police filled the high school parking late after police say the former student opened fire.
"We regularly train for these situations through the school and we use the different buildings of the school district," said Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller.
That training helped police defuse the situation quickly and prevent Wagner from going inside the building. School officials and police credit an officer - who was assigned to patrol the school parking lot - with preventing further injuries and possible causalities.
The suspect was taken to a hospital where he died.
The two victims were shot but those injuries are not life threatening.
Pictures show students huddled inside the gym for three hours until police gave the all clear.
"The cops honestly did a very good job," said student Drew Schwarz, who was crowned prom king before the shooting. "I got that and then it turned out to be this, so I'll remember it as more of a shooting."
