NEW YORK (CBS) Jack LaLanne, the health and fitness pioneer who died Sunday at age 96, was promoting a healthy lifestyle right up until his death.

LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California's central coast, his longtime agent Rick Hersh said.

Lalanne ate healthy and exercised every day of his life up until the end, Hersh said. And to the end, he promoted the lifetstyle for others.

In late December, he wrote on his blog that the new year was an opportunity for "more goals, new adventures and a healthier year! The stronger we become the more longevity we gain. Your waistline is your lifeline so let's keep it up!"

His last blog entry, dated Jan. 20, 2011, had these words: "Hope you all are keeping your New Year's Resolutions to taking care of the most important person on this earth, YOU!!!!"
