In Baghdad: Randall Pinkston

Return to Showdown in the Gulf
Diplomats are pleased about Annan's visit but hold out little hope for the success of his mission, reports CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston.

An Iraqi official has told CBS that Annan is viewed as a messenger from the United States with little room to negotiate. The Iraqis believe the U.S. is determined to bomb Baghdad and not willing to compromise, Pinkston said.

As a precautionary measure, another 30 U.N. humanitarian-aid workers left Iraq in buses Friday morning. Thirty-one workers were evacuated Friday, and those who were out of the country on vacation or business have been told not to return.
