How Cheap Can Printers Get?

I remember paying six or seven hundred dollars for my first ink jet printer, an original Hewlett Packard DeskJet about ten years ago. Today, it seems, they're practically giving them away. Lexmark has been leading the way in low cost printers. Its new Z12 goes for just 59 dollars. Great for dorm rooms or kids' rooms. Lexmark's Jeff Willard…

"We have been focused on making low cost, technology leading ink jet printers for years. When our competitors said that we couldn't make a printer for under a hundred dollars that performed well, we did it in 1997 with our Lexmark 1000 and we continue to do that over and over again and astound our competitors."
The low end printers do a good job for most applications, but if you're into digital photography and want to print your own photos, better to spend a little more….

"With a printer like the Lexmark Z52, a 24 by 12 hundred DPI printer, you can literally produce a print that is almost close to printing press quality. Printing press quality would be a three thousand DPI print, you're at a twenty four hundred DPI print…it approaches printing press quality."
For under 180 dollars. Keep in mind, you'll spend more money on the cartridges…ink jet cartridges aren't cheap. A color photo print can cost you as much as fifty cents for a full page. You can find more info at Lexmark.com. You can find us at Bootcamp.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
