Fla. police discover burning human remains in trunk of car

WESTON, Fla. – Homicide detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office are looking for clues after unrecognizable, charred human remains were discovered inside a burning car in Weston, Fla. on Monday, reports CBS Miami.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion told CBS Miami that the remains were discovered by a department fire unit around 9:30 a.m. Monday. “They were driving down U.S. 27 when they saw a plume of smoke. They drove around the area to find a point of origin. That’s how they ended up down a remote road in Weston.”

“They quickly extinguished the fire and decided to open the trunk just to totally search the vehicle. At that point they found human remains inside the trunk,” said Concepcion. “The remains are completely charred and unrecognizable… We can’t tell if it is male or female or anything else.”

The gutted shell of the car was removed from the crime scene with the body inside. It was placed on a flatbed truck and taken for further examination.

According to Concepcion, the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office is in the process of identifying the remains.

“If anyone has any information or details, as small as they might be, it might be of some help to our detectives so please come forward,” said Concepcion.

Investigators have not heard from any potential witnesses.

“This is a very remote area of Broward County and the only access to this area is from U.S. 27,” Concepcion said. “There is no reason for...travel down this road. Evidently the person who did this crime was trying to hide this crime.”

Those with information about the burning car or the body found are asked to call Crime Stoppers of Broward County at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
