Fall's Hottest Back-to-School Trends for Kids

(NYC/CBS) Back-to-school shopping is something most kids look forward to -- and we're not talking about notebooks and pens -- we're talking fall fashions.

But what's "in" this year?

Here are some of this season's hottest fashions for fall for girls and boys:

Girls:

A few staple pieces to keep in mind this fall include: dark wash skinny jeans, layered knits, belts (super thick and super thin), and of course, the ever-classic ballet flats.

When it comes to jeans, skinny is great. Abercrombie has the Brett Super Skinny. Other stores like Forever 21 offer super skinny and classic skinny cuts starting at $15.80.

If you like a little more flare in your life, Lucky Brand Jeans specializes in denim, and has all the cuts and washes that you might be looking for. From boot cut to straight leg, Lucky Brand jeans are prepared for this season's hottest jean look.

Shoes are often a girl's best friend, and this season is no different -- there are plenty of cute ones to choose from. For the casual look, ballet flats are an easy way of keeping your feet happy and still looking cute and polished. Steve Madden offers a large collection at an affordable price, and they also carry the ever-so-popular Oxfords style.

Boots are all the rage. This season, go all or nothing. Grab a pair of ankle boots like these Naughty Monkey booties from Nordstrom or go for the over-the-knee look with these Chinese Laundry boots also found at Nordstrom.

For tops, fitted and loose looks can both be gorgeously done. For a loose, casual looking shirt, opt for the 'boyfriend' fit (in plain or plaid). These loose button-ups are designed with a woman's proportions in mind, so they can still be gathered at the waist with a thin belt or worn tucked in to create a great laid-back look.

Boys:

Back to school fashion is fairly simple for the gentlemen. The colors stay pretty neutral in the fall season, but spice it up with some textures, like tweed.

Keep in mind, layering pieces can help you create a lot of different outfit using only a few staple pieces in your wardrobe.

Denim is also a great trend right now. A nice denim button up can be found at Lucky Brand.

As it gets chillier, try a military-style jacket. Military-style jackets can be found at Gap or in twill at Old Navy.
