Editorial: Keep Peace When Protesting Prop 8

This story was written by Editorial Board, Daily Bruin

It has been more than a week since Californians voted in favor of Proposition 8s ban on same-sex marriage. However, as last Thursdays protest proved, it seems this issue is far from resolved.
(UWIRE) -- Many more marches are expected to crop up across the state this weekend, including the UCLA March Against Proposition 8, which will take place Friday from 7 p.m.to 9 p.m. in Bruin Plaza.

The editorial board encourages students against Proposition 8 to take an active role in the protest.

However, in encouraging students to bring signs, bring candles, bring passion and bring friends, as advertisements for the UCLA march read, we also urge students (as well as the UCPD) to keep this demonstration peaceful in the wake of the violence that occurred at last weeks protests on Santa Monica Boulevard.

The passing of Proposition 8 affects many at UCLA, and this is the time for those unhappy with the outcome of last Tuesdays general election to take a stand and let their state legislator know that the discussion concerning the legality of same-sex marriage has only just begun.

Actions speak louder than words, and the fewer physical and violent actions taken tomorrow night, the louder protestors words will be heard in Sacramento.
