Defense Rests In British Tourist Murder Trial

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) - The defense in the trial of a New Jersey man who admits killing one of Britain's most eligible bachelors has rested after calling a single witness to testify.

Robert Davies of North Wildwood is charged with murder and other crimes stemming from the August 2007 stabbing death of Lavern Paul Ritch of Pennarth, Wales. Davies says he feared Ritch was part of a gang bent on harming or killing him moments after Davies had been assaulted by someone else on the streets of Margate, a Jersey shore town.

Ritch, a contestant on the British version of the "American Gladiators" TV show, was trying to intervene to help Davies.

On Monday, the defense called a prosecutor's investigator to testify on the layout of the bar in which Davies and the man who admits punching him had been.
