(CBS )What's the best diet for weight loss? U.S. News & World Report just weighed in, releasing its annual "Best Diet" rankings.

To create the rankings - which cover Jenny Craig, Atkins, Weight Watchers, and other popular eating plans - the magazine asked 22 experts to rate each diet in seven categories: short-term weight loss, long-term weight loss, how easy it is to follow, its nutritional completeness, its safety, its ability to prevent or manage diabetes, and its ability to prevent or manage heart disease.

What diet do the experts think best prevents diabetes? The panel picked the DASH diet. Developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood institute, the diet actually is designed to lower blood pressure, by cutting salt and fatty and sugary foods.

How about for preventing heart disease? The Ornish diet took the cake - figuratively, of course. Its high-fiber, low-fat vegetarian regimen was proven to reverse heart disease, according to a landmark 1990 Lancet study.

But let's be real. The question everyone wants to know is this: Which diet is best for weight loss?
