Coming Home For Thanksgiving
This column was written by CBS News Early Show Co-Anchor Harry Smith.
Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday without question, I like the meal and the friends and family, The coming together.
For the first time I will have a kid coming home from college.
It seems like only yesterday that I was hitch hiking across the Midwest to visit my girlfriend in Colorado for Thanksgiving.
I'd wear my college letter jacket because it enhanced my chances of getting picked up.
I got rides from truckers, salesman, old and odd couples, and yes even from hippies in VW vans.
There was a sense of adventure when you were on the road back in the day.
My son is coming home in an airplane.
He called to say he was stuck in a middle seat between a mom and a couple of screaming kids.
That's not quite the same as standing next to an abandoned truck stop in the freezing cold wondering if you were ever going to get a ride.
Still the fact that he'd get up before six to make an early plane just to come home means maybe he misses us a little.
And I'm thankful for that.
