CBS Poll: Starr Should Drop It

A growing number of Americans feel that Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr should drop his investigation of President Clinton, according to the latest CBS News poll.

The poll found 55 percent of Americans felt Starr should drop the investigation immediately—5 percent more than felt the same way two weeks ago. Only 12 percent of those polled rated Starr favorably.

But that's not to say Americans disbelieve Clinton had an affair with intern Monica Lewinsky. Those polled were more likely than not to think Clinton had the affair—45 percent said the accusations were probably true.

This poll was conducted among a nation-wide random sample of 782 adults, interviewed by telephone March 1-2, 1998. The error due to sampling could be plus or minus four percentage points for results based on the entire sample; the error on individual change is much smaller.
