Peter Fonda To Receive Career Achievement Award

3Peter Fonda, the king of cool in "Easy Rider," will receive the 2008 King Vidor Career Achievement Award at next month's San Luis Obispo International Film Festival.

He will appear at the festival March 15 to accept the honor, Executive Director Wendy Eidson said Wednesday.

The King Vidor award, named after the director of the 1956 movie "War and Peace," honors career achievement in filmmaking.

Fonda, who will turn 68 on Saturday, is best known for his role in the 1969 film "Easy Rider." He has received two Oscar nominations, one for acting ("Ulee's Gold") and one for screenwriting ("Easy Rider").

His screen credits also include "Race With the Devil" and "3:10 to Yuma."

The festival runs March 7-16.

Justin Timberlake To Star In Upcoming Film "The Open Road"

4The new star of the Corpus Christi Hooks minor league baseball team wants some playing tips.

Justin Timberlake will portray fictional Hooks player Carlton Garrett in the upcoming movie "The Open Road." The 27-year-old pop star tried to meet with players of the Houston Astros' Double-A team in Austin recently, but schedules didn't align.

"Justin wants to portray what it's like playing for the Hooks, playing for an Astros minor league team and playing at Whataburger Field," Hooks President J.J. Gottsch said.

"The Open Road" is the story of a young man trying to reconnect with his father, a legendary athlete played by Jeff Bridges, as he struggles to get home to his ailing mother. Mary Steenburgen and Kate Mara are also in the film.

Writer-director Michael Meredith, son of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith and a former University of Texas student, drew on his Texas ties for the concept, Gottsch said.

While most of the real Hooks are preparing for spring training, Gottsch remained hopeful that a handful of players may be able to consult with Timberlake, No. 31 in the movie, about his role.

Shooting on the movie began Tuesday in Hammond, La.

Last year, Timberlake voiced a character in the Mike Myers opus "Shrek the Third." His screen credits also include "Alpha Dog" and "Black Snake Moan."

Garth Brooks On "The Tonight Show"

5Garth Brooks said on the "Tonight Show" that his recent benefit concerts raised nearly $7 million.

Last month, Brooks played five shows over three days to help victims of last year's Southern California wildfires and firefighters.

But playing live can have its embarrassing moments. Brooks told Jay Leno about a show last November in Kansas City, Mo., where a bra thrown from the audience got tangled up in his headset mic.

He said that had to be the one show he brought his young daughters to see. Brooks added that he's experienced just about everything during concerts, but the bra incident caused him to fold like "a cheap pair of socks."

American Idol: Ladies Fight Off Flu

There's something catchy about "American Idol" and it's not just the tunes.

Many of the contestants have come down with the nasty flu bug that's hit many parts of the country.

Thursday night, the ladies got their chance to perform, sick or not. And as the night wore on, it seemed the judges found more to like.

Among those who the judges gave thumbs-up to were Alexandrea Lushington, Asia'h Epperson, Ramiele Malubay and Syesha Mercado.

Simon trashed a couple of acts, comparing the Britney Spears impersonator Kady Malloy to someone who could be impersonated by a pencil and Brooke White the nanny, who Simon said reminded him of an ad for dishwashing liquid.
