2 dead, 11 rescued after boat overturns in state park in Colorado

A boat flipped over in Lake Pueblo State Park in Colorado Sunday night, killing two people, authorities said. Eleven others were rescued. 

Colorado Parks and Wildlife said they received a call around 7:37 p.m. on Sunday following witness reports of a boat capsizing in high winds. 

There were five adults and eight juveniles on board, according to CPW. All the juveniles were saved. Officials immediately recovered the remains of a woman who appeared to have drowned and began a search for one missing adult. The search was conducted in 80 feet of water that was a brisk 60 degrees, CPW said.

"Our MERT team worked all night and around 5:45 a.m we located a victim in 107 feet of water," said Joe Stadterman, park manager at Lake Pueblo and MERT team member.

That second body was recovered in 107 feet of water along the north shore of Lake Pueblo State Park Tuesday morning, CPW announced. 

"This is a tragic loss of life," Stadterman added. "And it underscores the importance of being extremely careful around the water. If you are on or even near the water, we strongly urge you to wear a life jacket."
