Best fall buys

Back-to-school shopping is done and holiday shopping has yet to start, but consumers hunting for bargains will find plenty this fall. Kelli Grant, Senior Consumer Reporter for SmartMoney.com shares some of the best fall buys.

Go ahead and stock up on new jeans. This time of year, retailers tend to use jeans as a loss leader, offering big sales so that you'll come in for a pair or two and then stay to get more of your fall wardrobe. You'll see a lot of sales for 50% off, or better. Look for classic cuts so that what you buy now will get you through until next fall.

If you're in the market for a new car this is the time to buy. Dealerships are clearing their lots to make room for the 2012 models. Sales are picking up a little late this year, but September and October will be a great time to buy. Many dealerships are already offering $2,000 to $3,000 in cash back and special financing. Just don't wait too long, though, if you're picky about the color or options.

Get started on your garden now for next year. Garden centers are getting ready for winter, and offering up to 70% off. You might pick up a few colorful fall annuals, but the very best deals are those deeply discounted trees, shrubs and other perennials. It's still warm enough to plant, and you'll enjoy those year after year.

This is a good time to stock your wine rack. It's harvest season, and a lot of wineries are offering extra discounts, like 15% off a case instead of 10%. Look to social media for better deals. We're seeing more wineries offering free tastings or 20% off for checking in on social networking app Foursquare, and others offering 50% off on wine sale sites like Lot18.com.

Think ahead to Thanksgiving and Christmas travel, if you haven't already. Fare tend to creep higher starting in October as seats fill up. You're also more likely to face inconveniences like red-eye flights, connecting routes or a middle seat.
