ATM glitch spits out $37,000 to homeless man

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine - A malfunctioning ATM at a bank in Maine dispensed $37,000 in cash to a transient who requested $140, police say, according to CBS affiliate WGME.
South Portland police say they responded to the TD Bank branch Thursday morning after getting a call from a woman who said a man was spending an unusual amount of time at the ATM she was waiting to use. Officers responded and found the homeless man stuffing cash into a shopping bag.

The same man was found by police sleeping inside the bank beside the ATM the night before and police had kicked him out, according to the station.
The excess cash was returned to the bank and bank officials have declined to press charges, but police are still investigating, reports the station.

A bank official describes the problem as a "code error" and says no customer accounts were affected.
