Aniston Denies She's Engaged To Vaughn

Stories have been circulating for weeks that Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn are engaged.

The stars of "The Break-Up" haven't spoken about it in public until now, but Aniston tells it her way in the latest issue of People magazine.

People Editor at Large Jess Cagle, who's also an Early Show contributor, gave the scoop to co-anchor Hannah Storm Thursday.

He told Storm that Aniston actually approached People, because she wanted "to set the record straight. There were so many reports out there that they were engaged, and detailed reports about the way he proposed, and she was sort of disturbed that this had made its way into the mainstream media and was being reported as fact, and she just wanted to set the record straight."

"It's very rare for her to do that. She normally shies away from discussing anything about her relationships," Cagle said.

So what did Aniston say?

"She said, 'We are not engaged. There was no ring, no proposal.' "

Are they going out?

"They don't say they're going out," Cagle responded, "but they don't deny it, and they do sort of behave like a normal couple and go out to places and just don't talk about it. She says they're having a great time. That's all she says."

And why did she decide to speak out?

"There were really two reasons she wanted to set the record straight," Cagle replied. "One was it was being reported as fact in the mainstream media, not just the tabloids. But also, her friends, (her family), her publicists, they were being accused of lying when they denied the story. So I think the most important thing to her it that she's coming to their defense."

Us Weekly reported in a recent cover story, citing anonymous sources, that Vaughn had proposed to Aniston on June 27 on a private jet after a trip to Mexico. Janice Min, the editor in chief of Us Weekly, appeared on the "Today" show Aug. 9 and told co-anchor Ann Curry, "This engagement happened more than six weeks ago ... Vince had the ring, he got down on one knee and proposed. And Jennifer said yes on the flight."

Us Weekly is sticking by its story, which other media outlets picked up.

"Us Weekly based its story on lengthy interviews with four separate and independent sources close to the couple, including two who learned of the engagement directly from Vince Vaughn," the magazine said in a statement Wednesday. "Jennifer's publicist never denied the engagement in advance of publication."

"When it starts to travel over into the "Today" show and CNN and supposedly reliable and accurate news programs, then you just go, 'This is insane,'" Aniston told People magazine. "People are getting fed a lot of bull."
