The 9 most robocalled cities in America

According to one estimate, Americans will get a whopping 30 billion robocalls this year. YouMail, a telecom services company, said that in the first four months of 2016 an estimated 10 billion robocalls have already been made -- that's about 33 calls for every man, woman and child.

Besides being annoying, there's a chance the calls are from scammers trying to get you to divulge information about yourself.

The Federal Trade Commission, which has filed more than 100 lawsuits against 600 companies and individuals related to robocalls that violate its Do Not Call list, shared the following tips on how to handle robocalls:

  • Hang up the phone. Don't press 1 to speak to a live operator and don't press any other number to get your number off the list. If you respond by pressing any number, it will probably just lead to more robocalls.

  • Consider contacting your phone provider and asking them to block the number (and whether they charge for that service). Remember that telemarketers change caller ID information easily and often, so it might not be worth paying a fee to block a number that will change.

  • Report your experience to the FTC online or by calling 1-888-382-1222.

YouMail, which offers a service that tricks robocalls into thinking that a targeted number is disconnected, has compiled a list of the most robocalled cities in April.
