State Assembly Approves Rental Car Recall Bill
SACRAMENTO (AP) — One house of the California Legislature has narrowly approved the nation's first state law that would force rental car companies to pull vehicles off the road after a safety recall.
The state Assembly passed the bill Thursday on a 42-26 vote, one more than the simple majority needed. It now goes to the Senate.
The bill was introduced after the death of two young women in a fiery crash in 2004. They were driving a car they had rented more than a month after the company was notified of a safety recall for a defect that could cause a fire.
Assemblyman Bill Monning, the bill's author, says the bill will help keep drivers safe.
