Security Increased For Tuesday Opening Of West Hollywood Planned Parenthood Clinic

WEST HOLLYWOOD ( — Security will be increased as a new Planned Parenthood clinic is set to hold a grand opening on Tuesday, just days after a murderous rampage at a clinic in Colorado Springs.

The city of West Hollywood is prepared to roll out an official welcome to the new clinic, while nerves were tested after police say Robert Dear, 57, killed three people at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado before officers were able to stop him.

"We met with security today, and we've gone over our plan for tomorrow, which included a couple of extra deputies assigned to the front of the building, as well as the surrounding area," Sheriff's Lt. Dave Smith said.

People in West Hollywood, meanwhile, say they do not expect a repeat of the tragedy.

"I think people are a little bit more open-minded here in West Hollywood," Bryan Hamilton said. "It actually would be a good resource for the community."

West Hollywood Councilman John Duran says that very community is no stranger to threats or controversy.

"We watched what happened in Colorado, but we are also the home of really controversial stuff," Duran said. "Whether it's marriage equality, or demonstrators in the streets, and so West Hollywood is kind of always on guard for right wing fundamentalism coming into our community."

The Sheriff's Department says they are confident in their security measures, after having toured the building.

While the clinic has been open since Summer, officials say they had decided to wait until Tuesday to make their presence known in order to coordinate with local leaders.

Authorities say they have not received any threats to staff or patients, and they intend to keep it that way.

"There's policemen always up and down this street, as well as the security ambassadors, so it should be OK," Autumn Sinkford said.
