K-9 Officer Bruno Retires From Service
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Bruno, the Anaheim police K-9 who nearly died after being shot while on duty, officially retired from service Tuesday evening.
The beloved canine cop was released from Yorba Regional Animal Hospital on May 2 after undergoing several surgeries.
Bruno, a 7-year-old German Shepherd, was critically injured in March while leading Handling Officer RJ Young to a suspect who had shot at two parole officers in Anaheim.
Young has credited his partner with protecting him and fellow officers from gunfire.
Bruno was honored with a formal retirement ceremony at the Anaheim City Council meeting, where he was met with a standing ovation.
Officer Young called it a "bittersweet day," and thanked those who have cheered the beloved K-9 on through his recovery.
"The support has been overwhelming. The thoughts, the prayers - I've said it ten hundred times - is the reason we're here so fast. And the reason my partner looks so good," Young said.
"It's a bittersweet day. I'm excited to see what retirement's going to hold for him, and I'm also very saddened that we're not going to be together in a police car anymore."
Young also said Bruno's retirement life will consist of long, lazy days, lots of retirement snacks and naps.
