Garden Grove Man Sentenced For Opening Fire At Fashion Island

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison for firing 54 rounds of ammunition outside of a Newport Beach mall back in 2012.

Mark Sariana Gurrola of Garden Grove pleaded guilty on Friday to numerous counts of shooting at an occupied building and two counts of aggravated assault with sentencing enhancements for use of a firearm, according to a written statement by the Orange County District Attorney's office.

The charges stemmed from the Dec. 15, shooting outside of Fashion Island.

According to authorities, it was then that Gurrola drove his Honda Civic into the parking lot and opened fire toward a Macy's department store.

While none of the bullets struck the store, the shooting caused a stampede that left two shoppers injured, including a 4-year-old girl, the statement said.

Authorities said Gurrola then dropped his weapon and surrendered to police. He has remained in custody since, and was given credit for about a year and a half behind bars.

"At the time of Gurrola's arrest, police recovered ammunition for different weapons including .44 caliber, .380 caliber, and .38 caliber, and no other weapons," the statement said.

No further information was available.
