City Officials To Release 20K Shade Balls Into LA Reservoir

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — City officials on Monday plan to release 20,000 shade balls into the Los Angeles Reservoir to help comply with regulations for safe drinking water.

Shade balls are made of a black, plastic and weighted material that is used block much of the daily sunlight from reaching the water's surface.

Authorities explained the shade balls also help to protect against chemical reactions that may cause algae blooms and other environmental exposures.

City officials added the addition of today's shade balls will bring the total up to 96 million.

This is expected to save 300 million gallons per year.
