Brawl At The Mall Leads To Chaos When Customers Mistake Flying Punches, Breaking Glass For Bullets

CULVER CITY (CBSLA)  -- It was mayhem at the Westfield Culver City mall when some patrons believed there was an active shooter on the premises.

Police investigated and found no signs of a shooter.

Cellphone video of people breaking the front window of a Foot Locker is believed to have touched off the frenzy about a shooting.

Video shows people trying to force their way inside before the front window is broken out.

Why the people broke the window is unclear but it appears to have possibly occurred while people were fighting.

CBS2/KCAL9's Laurie Perez reported from the location and said things quickly went back to normal.

A fight between two men -- just after 6 p.m. -- apparently touched off all the chaos.  The two men were fighting inside the store while others, presumably friends of the men, began tugging on the glass door to get inside the store.

After the glass shatters, the men scatter. At the same time, two cellphone videos capture a number of people screaming and yelling.

As people began running, thoughts of an active shooter went through people's minds before moments later people were reporting hearing shots.

The mall never went on lock down and no active shooter protocol was put in place.

Perez reached out to the mall for a comment but did not hear back.

No injuries or arrests were reported.
