Untraditional donuts have given certain donut shops a sense of allure. Customers at these shops no longer have to see donuts as cheap, stereotypical cop food. Donuts don't all have to look the same. There are toppings, fillings, doughs and designs that the beat cops of yore would have never dreamed could exist. Here is a look at donut shops in Orange County that are selling some of the best untraditional donuts around.

Poqet Donuts advertises itself as being a "donut nirvana" and specialize in custom-made donuts. You can use their donut bar to build your own donut, or choose from their already made donuts. If you want to make your own, simply select a donut, filling and toppings, and your donut will be created according to your specification. Their signature donuts include a maple donut with bacon on top and a donut version of a s'more (which even has a marshmallow tucked inside the donut hole).

"Live. Love. Donuts" is the motto of The Donuttery. They are a 24-hour restaurant, so you can live and love with their donuts at any time of day. The donuts are intriguing, and some of them look like complicated pastries. One picture on their Twitter feed shows a Tres Leche Donut, which looks more like a tiny cake than a donut, and it is described as "being light and spongy" from being soaked in three different kinds of milk.

Do these people sell donuts? They have a picture of a purple headed monster with marshmallow eyes on their facebook page, and the strange creature appears to be barfing up some kind of purple mush. Apparently, the monster is their taro flavored donut. Perhaps they ought to call it the Taro Monster. With that said, they have plenty of other pictures of unique donuts, and not all of them look nearly so gross and yummy at the same time.

Sidecar makes interesting donuts, and they keep their donuts interesting by regularly changing their menu. Their selection is switched up on a monthly basis, when a new roster of donuts come into play. Every Monday, a donut from their roster is selected to be made gluten-free for the week. They also have "daily flavors." For instance, one of their daily flavors for March 29 was the country ham and egg donut, which is a donut filled with ham, egg and hollandaise sauce.

If you haven't already been to Afters Ice Cream, it's time to get acquainted with their inventive untraditional donut. The ice cream shop is home to a very delicious kind of donut that the founders have created themselves and dubbed the "milky bun." A milky bun is an ice cream sandwich, and the bread part is a sliced donut. In between the sliced donut halves is a scoop of ice cream. One topping on the ice cream is included.
