Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Angelo Henderson Dies At 51
DETROIT (WWJ) - A well-known Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, talk show host and associate minister in metro Detroit is dead. The Oakland County Medical Examiners Office says Angelo B. Henderson of 1200 WCHB radio died Saturday morning of natural causes.
Henderson was 51.
WWJ's City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas knew Henderson for more than 30 years.
"It's a real shocker, I do know that he had knee surgery but the corenor is saying that it was natural causes," said Thomas. "You know, when you think about it, I think he's about 50 years old, you think of 50-years-old and natural causes and it just doesn't compute in my mind."
"He was the voice of the city of Detroit, he cared deeply about the community, he founded the Detroit 300, they would go out and just hunt down criminals and ask people to speak up and to do away with the 'no snitch' policy."
Henderson was also the Director of Evangelism and Outreach at Triumph Church.
"A giant tree int he forest of humnaity has fallen," said Rev. Solomon Kinloch, Jr., senior pastor of Triumph Church. "Metro Detroit's loss is now Heaven's gain."
"His larger than life personality is visible through his time as an award-winning journalist and radio host, but internally, we also knew Angelo to be a tireless worker behind the scenes whose heart for people in metropolitan Detroit drove him to do monumnetal things in support of the community. Today, Triumph Church not only lost a part of our team, we lost a member of the family."
Wall Street Journal Radio Network senior editor Ed Coury worked with Henderson at the Journal.
"Angelo, of course, covered automobile issues and later because of his abilities & skills , he was elevated to the position of writing features & stories that would appear on the front page of the Journal and because of that work, Angelo Henderson won the highest award in journalism, he won a Pulitzer Prize," said Coury.
Coury says Henderson was one of the friendliest people who was very active in the community.
Henderson was also a former President of the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
