State Rep Doesn't Want Pension Money Funding Trump's Border Wall
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A state representative from the Northwest Side of Chicago says if President-elect Donald Trump is allowed to build his border wall after all, then Illinois pension funds shouldn't deal with the companies that are hired to build it.
State Rep. Will Guzzardi (D-Chicago) said Illinois is a blue state that is anti-Trump, and anti-wall.
"We don't believe that Illinois dollars should be used to help send a message of hate to immigrants in this country," he said.
Guzzardi has introduced a bill that would keep Illinois pension funds from investing in companies hired to build a border wall.
He said he doesn't know how Gov. Bruce Rauner feels about the proposed legislation. For that matter, he doesn't know how the republican governor feels about Trump at all.
"The governor - I think, it seems - is trying to play to his base of Trump supporters, while also not offending other folks. So he's trying to duck this problem, and that's unacceptable," he said.
Before a proposal like Guzzardi's -- or similar legislation -- even reaches Rauner's desk, it would have to be approved by the House and Senate. A spokesman for House Speaker Mike Madigan said "it's something we'll take a look at."
