Hackers Stole Data On Every Federal Worker: Union
(CBS) -- A federal data breach is turning out to be much worse than first believed.
A union representing government workers now says data on every federal employee in the nation was recently hacked.
Here's what may be in hackers' hands: Social Security numbers; birthdates; addresses; pay history; even military records.
This all stems from a December cyber-attack on the government's personnel department. Some pointed the finger at china, but that nation has denied any involvement.
In Chicago, federal workers CBS 2 interviewed say they're worried and they want answers.
"It never should have happened. We need better cyber security for the government. (For) every program out here, there's a hacker sitting somewhere that's their job all day," Allison McKinley says.
There are about 50,000 federal workers in the Chicago area.
